How effective these strategies are at preventing injuries is debated by experts, because when playgrounds are made from padded materials, children often take more risks. Each year in the United States, emergency departments treat more than , children ages 14 and younger for playground-related injuries. From January to August , CPSC received reports of deaths to children younger than 15 that involved playground equipment. On public playgrounds, more injuries occur on climbers than on any other equipment.

Playgrounds in low-income areas have more maintenance-related hazards than playgrounds in high-income areas. For example, playgrounds in low-income areas had significantly more trash, rusty play equipment, and damaged fall surfaces. As a result of what some experts say is overprotectiveness driven by a fear of lawsuits, playgrounds have been designed to be, or at least to appear, excessively safe. The equipment limitations result in the children receiving less value from the play time.

Successfully taking a risk is empowering to children. For example, a child climbing to the top of a tall jungle gym feels happy about successfully managing the challenging climb to the top, and he experiences the thrill of being in a precarious, high position. By contrast, the child on a low piece of equipment, designed to reduce the incidence of injuries from falls, experiences no such thrill, sense of mastery, or accomplishment.

Additionally, a lack of experience with heights as a child is associated with increased acrophobia fear of heights in adults. The appearance of safety encourages unreasonable risk-taking in children, who might take more reasonable risks if they correctly understood that it is possible to break a bone on the soft surfaces under most modern equipment. Finally, the playground that is designed to appear low-risk is boring, especially to older children. Risk management is an important life skill, and risk aversion in playgrounds is unhelpful in the long term. Experts studying child development such as Tim Gill have written about the over-protective bias in provision for children, particularly with playgrounds.

Universally designed playgrounds are created to be accessible to all children. There are three primary components to a higher level of inclusive play:.

For example, rubber paths and ramps replace sand pits and steps, and some features are placed at ground level. Efforts to accommodate children on the autism spectrum , who may find playgrounds overstimulating or who may have difficulty interacting with other children, have been less common.

Play components may include earth shapes sculptures , environmental art, indigenous vegetation trees, shrubs, grasses, flowers, lichens, mosses , boulders or other rock structures, dirt and sand, natural fences stone, willow, wooden , textured pathways, and natural water features. We had a great stay and would highly recommend The Playground, we especially loved all the plants and flowers around the property! Amanda and Steve were extremely friendly kind and thoughtful. Mattress very comfortable, good fans and clean shower and toilets. Roof top bar very pleasant in the late afternoon.

Large family room. Friendly staff, comfy beds, clean, super safe, beautiful location. Best sunset. The hostel is new and Amanda made a lot of effort to make sure we were happy with some great advice about Kampot and the surrounding area. The location is great, not far from the main town. The hosts arranged scooter rental for our trip up to Bokor Mountain and also a tuk tuk driver to visit the secret lake and pepper farm.

Amanda also recommended a visit to an infinity pool which was amazing! The breakfast was tasty and we especially recommend the pancakes with mango and tamarind jam. All in all we had a great stay and would definitely visit again. I believe we were one of the first guests. The rooms ale really comfortable and clean, fast internet and the hosts will make you feel like home. They are really passionate about what they are doing.

On the roof there is a big patio with a bar and great view. You can enjoy the sunset up there while having a cold draft beer. Breakfast and dinner was also very good.

Breakfast was really good and the advices for dinner were also very helpful. Additionally the tour they organised for us was good. Rather than staying in a guest house or hotel it felt like staying in a home of a good old friend with total freedom to move around. The welcoming and lovely atmosphere of the villa reflects the exceptional hospitality and helpfulness of the owners who master the difficult balance between treating you as a guest and as a friend. After more than 10 years visiting frequently Kampot with my Khmer-German family I have never experienced anything similar.

Better impossible! Or as we say in Germany: Mehr geht nicht! Only the location could be a point here because the guesthouse is not located in the city center. We really enjoyed our stay at the playground, because the hosts were such open and friendly. I think that's not the right place to complain about the rain The Playground is the place to stay in Kampot, not only for families!

We stayed three nights at the Playground and loved every minute.

As soon as we arrived we received a warm welcome and were given a tour of the guesthouse, which led us to the rooftop bar and restaurant, which is where we ended up spending the rest of the day! Our room was spacious, had stylish decor and furnishings and a big comfy bed. The shared bathrooms are clean and have hot water showers. The communal areas are beautifully decorated, with some exceptional artwork, so you get an art gallery thrown in the mix too!

We had several meals there and all are freshly home cooked, great value and generous portions. We also enjoyed hanging out at the bar, with Steve acting as a very persuasive barman and rustling up some great cocktails as well as perfectly chilled beers. We took advantage of their moped hire one day to head out sightseeing and on another day went for the tuk tuk tour to pepper plantation, salt fields, cave etc Amanda and Steve are the friendliest hosts we've met during our nine months of travel and their daughter Finja is a delight.

We would love to head back to the Playground some time and would highly recommend it as a place to stay or even just head there for a few hours to chill out on the rooftop or bring your kids to play on the jungle gym. Under pressure and an appointment in PP and I think I ate too much, but it was damn good! What an amazing building with chill roof in the evening and for breakfast time. Steve and Amanda were awesome.
